Cost and Financing for Bariatric Surgery

The most important part of your decision regarding your bariatric procedure should be choosing a certified surgeon, who operates in a surgical unit that works with the highest quality standards. This is about your health and your life, so your main priority should be to find a place that offers safety and excellent patient care. The only way you can truly limit your risk is if you trust your surgery to a certified center, and your long-term success will depend on the support and follow-up program they provide. If during your research you find a surgical option with a price that seems too good to be true, it probably is.

When analyzing costs and options, please keep in mind that quality and safety have a price, and even though LIMARP is a competitive clinic, we spare no expense when it comes to the safety of our patients.

Which treatments are not covered by insurance?2024-05-24T18:19:56+00:00

Not all types of bariatric surgery are covered by health insurances, though. The bariatric surgeries that are usually covered by most insurance companies are:

      • Gastric Bypass Surgery (also known as Roux-en-Y)
      • Gastric Sleeve Surgery (also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy)
      • Biliopancreatic Bypass with Duodenal Switch
      • Gastric Lap Band Surgery

The bariatric surgeries not usually covered by Canadian or American insurances are:

      • Mini Gastric Bypass (also known as One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass)
      • Intragastric Balloon Surgery
      • Any bariatric surgery in non-obese patients or for the treatment of a non-threatening disease

In these cases, the cost of bariatric surgery is usually at the patient’s expense.

Can the cost of my treatment be covered by my medical insurance?2024-05-24T18:19:27+00:00

Our treatments at LIMARP may be covered by your American or Canadian medical insurance, although this mostly depends on your insurance’s policy. Many medical insurances cover the cost of bariatric surgery interventions since they have been recognized as safe and effective treatments for obesity that improve the general health condition and life quality of obese patients. Obesity itself has also been recognized as a global health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Now, most insurances don’t include bariatric surgery coverage in their base plans, but offer the possibility of doing so at additional cost, with a prime payment. Each insurance policy sets a series of conditions and limits to cover weigh lost surgery cost. The most frequent requirements solicited by insurance companies to bariatric surgery candidates are:

      • To be 18 or older
      • To have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher
      • To have a BMI of 35 and evidence of having two or more comorbidities associated to obesity

These requirements must be met for coverage pre-approval. Some insurance companies have waiting times for pre-approval, or ask for proof showing that the comorbidities or obesity of the patient has persisted for more than 2 years. Some patients might have to wait months or up to two years to obtain coverage pre-approval. These are only some factors that patients should take into consideration, so they can plan accordingly and can set clear expectations of the process.

Medicare and Medicaid also cover the cost of bariatric surgery in the United States.
